The war on progress.

Scott Brown Under Fire for Going Rogue on Jobs Bill - AOL News

So there’s a news link there, mostly a silly one talking about how the great saviour, Scott Brown, is apparently not big with the internet set for voting with the Dems on a bill to create more jobs.  No surprise there, I suppose.

But the part that stuck out to me, was some of the quotes mentioning “progressives”.  John Stewart also talked about this on last night’s show.

It seems the new talking point for the Republicans and conservatives in general, indeed the new target of hate and fear, is these “progressives”.  They’ve moved on from the “socialist” Red-baiting card, and actually decided to simply go after any kind of progress itself.

I mean seriously, “progressives”? What the fuck kind of a warped mentality is against progress?  Is the GOP to become the party of the Amish?  Wait no, I guess they’re too communal, which sounds too much like communism, so they’re obviously evil lefties.  Evil lefties who live in barns and have no telephones and are more devout Christians than the entire radical right put together.

But I digress. “Progressive” has long been largely a positive term, one used by the left to refer to a general attitude of seeking social progress. It would seem to me that the conservatives, in an attempt to reach out and find a new talking point, have simply latched onto a popular liberal term and decided to make it a bad word without stopping to consider for an instant what they’re actually doing by saying that.

Has the right in this country really regressed so far as to oppose progress itself, or have they just made a severe linguistic blunder without realizing it?
